Top Picks for Prenatal Vitamins

My Top Prenatal Vitamin Picks // It's Jou Life blog Prenatal Vitamins?

My biggest takeaway from my annual visits with my ob-gyn: The importance for women to take daily multivitamins or prenatal vitamins even before planning to get pregnant. Taking prenatal vitamins before getting pregnant preps your body with a solid foundation of nutrients. Prenatal vitamins consist of a variety of vitamins and minerals that help you and your baby get the nutrients that are essential for healthy development.

Make sure to look for a prenatal vitamin that includes:

    • 400 micrograms (mcg) of folic acid
    • 400 IU of vitamin D
    • 200 to 300 milligrams (mg) of calcium
    • 70 mg of vitamin C
    • 3 mg of thiamine
    • 2 mg of riboflavin
    • 20 mg of niacin
    • 6 mcg of vitamin B12
    • 10 mg of vitamin E
    • 15 mg of zinc
    • 17 mg of iron
    • 150 micrograms of iodine

My Thoughts

So the diligent (but sometimes forgetful) person that I am, have been taking multivitamins for as long as I can remember and recently shifted to prenatal vitamins the past couple of years. However, not all prenatals are created equal. I’ve tried quite a handful of brands and types and while some hit all the vitamin requirements, they taste terrible and I sometimes intentionally “forget” to take them. Recently the delicious gummy prenatals have stolen my heart but not all gummies contain all the vitamin requirements. This past year at the Natural Products Expo West, I’ve noticed there are now a plethora of companies coming out with prenatal gummies.

My Top Picks for Prenatal Vitamins

The Complete All-Star // Nature Made Prenatal Multi + DHA

Nature Made Prenatal Multi + DHA 200 Mg Softgels, Value Size, 60 + 30 Liquid softgels (Packing may vary) This prenatal vitamin soft gel all-star hits most of the essential nutrients, is wallet-friendly, relatively easy to swallow (1″ in length), and no nasty aftertaste. Nature Made has been a top favorite of doctors and the first brand I ever tried. Although I took this for about a year, I liked it but wanted to try others. I guess I was secretly hoping it’d taste delicious, like a candy gummy.

The Yummy Gummy for My Tummy // UpSpring Prenatal+

UpSpring Prenatal+ Multivitamin plus DHA, Choline and Natural Folate, 30 tablets and 30 softgels Yes! There are loads of yummy prenatal gummies popping up in the health supplement sphere now and I have to say, “It’s about time!” I met this brand at this year’s Natural Products Expo and I love their Mango + Peach gummy flavor!  UpSpring was so kind to have sent me these to try. I received a box (a month supply) of 90 gummies and 30 soft gels. Not only are they delicious, convenient to take, no nausea or fishy burps, they are also all natural, gluten-free, and non-gmo. This is what I”m currently taking and let me just say, I now never forget to take my three gummies and tiny DHA soft gel. However, I do take additional supplements to satisfy my essential nutrients intake. It’s officially become a delightful habit!

For The Vegetarian // Whole Foods Food-Cultured Prenatal Multi

These are ideal for the vegetarian. Not only does it satisfy almost all of the essential nutrients, it also includes a probiotic blend of fruits and herbs. My only disclaimer: they taste like how they look–green. Directions are to take three tablets (3/4″ in length) daily. I was taking these before I was introduced to UpSpring gummies and would follow up with candy or chocolate to get rid of the “green” aftertaste.

I’ve now come to find a balance–I either suck it up and take the nutritious, not-so-tasty pill, followed by candy or chocolate or take the I-can’t-get-enough yummy gummies and supplement with additional vitamins. Whichever route you choose, it’s important to take some kind of multivitamin every day.
