I’m a serious snacker
Those that know me can attest that I’m a serious snacker. As much as I praise healthy food choices I do crave chips, cookies, and chocolate. Oh, do I LOVE sweets! I’ve come to realize it’s not about denying myself certain foods, but really all about that balanced lifestyle. So instead of cutting them out entirely, I enjoy them in moderation.
Ideal situation? Find healthier alternatives to your favorite junk foods that are made with quality ingredients, high in nutrition, and are just as delicious.
My top 10 healthy food Discoveries from Natural Products Expo West 2017
Driven by the consistent growth of consumers demanding natural, healthy, and eco-conscious products, it’s no surprise that this mega-industry has a plethora of new products emerging every year. Here are my top healthy snack dupes that replace my favorite junk foods.
When I crave sugar & sour candy
Black Forest Organics – These are my favorite gummy bears (taste and texture) and I’ve tried countless brands. They also don’t leave a sugary after feel in my mouth. Why not? Because their ingredients are legit. It makes me feel better to know they use premium organic cane sugar and real fruit juice. Black Forest Organics also make Gummy Worms, Fruity Bites, Fruity Chews, and Sour Heads.
Yum Earth Organic Sour Twists – Remember those sour tapes back in the day? Growing up I used to walk to my local liquor store to buy bright teal and green colored sour tapes in baggies the owner used to pack and tie himself. These Yum Earth Organic Sour Twists are just as satisfying and made with organic and natural ingredients. The ultimate test? These don’t leave me with a fluorescent-colored tongue.
When I crave that crunch
Dang Sticky Rice Chips – These are dang good. Dang uses watermelon juice-sweetened organic Thai sticky rice and toasts it for that perfect crunch. With at least 30% less fat than regular potato chips, I’m obsessed. I look forward to trying their other flavors: Sriracha Spice and Coconut Crunch.
SeaSnax Chomperz – It’s been said to me more than once that I eat like a kid. I like to think because I have a youthful spirit(?) It’s probably more because I enjoy snacks that kids like. It then comes to no surprise that I LOVE SeaSnax Chomperz, a crunchy seaweed chip, that won the Best New Natural Kid’s Product at Expo West 2017. Delectable seaweed curls wrapped in rice and lightly seasoned with a pinch of sea salt has me coming back for more. Kids tested and adult approved.
HIPPEAS – Let’s get this straight. I love my Cheetos Puffs, but I have to say HIPPEAS Organic Chickpea Puffs packs a nutritional and palatable punch! They are light, crunchy, high in protein, fiber, and made with organic ingredients. Made with chickpeas (aka garbanzo beans, the main ingredient in hummus) they are not only packed with protein, but good for the environment. I learned at the expo that the chickpea plant naturally release nitrogen back into the earth as it grows. Also the company is socially conscious, supporting local farmers in Africa.
HannahMax Cookie Chips – You know the crunchy edge of a cookie? This is it. It’s as if a cookie and potato chip had a baby. Wholesome ingredients of creamy butter, cage-free eggs, and rich morsels of semi-sweet chocolate satisfy every bite of these crunchy chocolate chip cookie chips. The texture is similar to brownie brittles.
When I crave a warm drink
Gaia Golden Milk – During cold winter evenings I like to unwind with a satisfying warm drink and this has been a favorite. Golden Milk–a delicious blend of turmeric, dates, and herbs–is based on the traditional Ayurvedic recipe that has been savored for centuries and used to support the mind and body. Gaia makes it convenient with just adding hot water to the golden powder. It’s vegan, gluten-free, naturally sweetened with dates, and its main ingredient, turmeric, is an anti-inflammatory.
When I crave chocolate
Chocolove Peanut Butter Cups – Meet Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups’ healthier cousin. What’s not to love about creamy salted peanut butter in premium Belgian chocolate? Don’t like PB? They also make almond butter.
Nutiva Organic Hazelnut Spread with Cocoa – Nutella, step aside. This deliciously decadent vegan and organic spread has 40% less sugar than the leading brand and is quickly becoming my universal sweet condiment. I dip pretzel sticks and sliced apples in this, make my own “crepes” filled with this spread and fruits, top it on my pancakes, blend it into my protein shake, and drizzle over ice cream. Amazing to know it’s complete with 450mg Omega-3 and 5g of dietary fiber per serving. Available in Classic and Dark flavors.
When I crave salty & Sweet
Chimes Toasted Coconut Hard Toffee – A magical blend of real coconut milk, caramelized cane sugar, and toasted toffee won me over. I always have a few individually wrapped gems stashed in my bag for a little treat while I’m working, driving, or out doing errands.
Bonus Mention: When I crave pasta
Explore Cuisine Organic Edamame Spaghetti – Okay, this isn’t “junk food” but perfect for those who have dietary restrictions (gluten-free, vegan, low-carb, high-protein). I tried a sample at the expo and was blown away at how delicious and satisfying edamame spaghetti was while learning one serving contains nearly half of your daily protein and fiber requirements.
