$30 off ClassPass // bargain + fitness

CPAs a long time fitness fiend, spending time training for marathons and even owning memberships at two gyms, I finally found my groove in a consistent workout routine. All thanks to ClassPass.

I LOVE ClassPass. It’s a new kind of fitness membership that lets you enjoy diverse and exciting ways to work out. It’s a brilliant business model and suits my interests because I like variety and trying out new things. I’ve been doing hot yoga, spinning, circuit training, ballet barre, stand up paddle boarding and been meaning to try boxing and surfing.

Each workout is a good sweat leaving me recharged and refreshed. It’s challenging and I’ve learned to push myself physically and mentally. I’m stronger, more toned, built endurance and always leave feeling I can conquer the day. I recently ran a half marathon in hilly San Francisco and set my personal record (!) and I owe it all to spinning and the motivational energy of my favorite instructor, Rene. During that race I just kept pushing myself. My lungs burned and legs were tired, but I knew I had it in me.

I can’t stop talking about it to friends. CP doesn’t have promo offers often, but I just came across a $20 off your first month of unlimited group fitness classes. Note: I pay $119/month and max three classes at each studio. This is an awesome deal because sometimes a month membership at a fancy gym or studio runs $120+/month. This way I can jump around and get diversity and cross train at various studios in different cities.

NEW Offer! $30 off your first month special – Join me on ClassPass and you’ll get $30 off your first month of group fitness classes. From yoga and barre to cycling and Pilates, ClassPass lets you try the best boutique studios in your area. One monthly membership, endless options, all up to you! http://class.ps/gIHXY More details on the $30 off deal in a new post, here.

Do something good for your mind, body, soul this 2016. Cheers to good health!

Sephora Sun Safety Kit 2015

summer + smiles + sunblock

I love everything about the summer. Living in California the weather is always perfect. Summer is the season to enjoy the outdoors with a picturesque hike or hit the cool waters at the beach and pool. However being out in the sun has its responsibilities. I’m an avid believer and user in using a broad spectrum (UVA + UVB) sun protection of at least SPF 30 for my face and SPF 45 for my body.

So naturally as a lover of Sephora + SPF I always buy Sephora’s annual Sun Safety Kit. It’s a curated collection of everything SPF to protect from head to toe. This is a perfect introduction to try various products carried at Sephora, like tinted sunscreen, primer, self-tanner, BB cream and serums. It’s also a wonderful way to try different types of sunblock products–physical (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) and chemical-based (oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate) sunscreens. The sizes are perfect–airplane-friendly and compact enough to place in my purse.

I picked up the Sephora Sun Safety Kit 2015 at Sephora and it is packed with favorite oldies and new products I look forward to trying. This year it’s $32 (retail value $155) for 16 products.

Regardless of seasons or a cloudy day, it’s always important to protect your skin by wearing SPF everyday, especially on the face. I always wear at least SPF 30 on my face, neck and chest area.

Reviews to come as I try them all.

free fitness running

With the Nike Women’s SF Marathon next month, training should be in full gear. Below are a list of free running clubs to help whip us into shape. We always prefer running outdoors (no hamster-style on the treadmill) and this is the perfect way to make running fun and enjoyable.

It’s a great way to meet new friends with like interests, there are multiple distances (5K, 5 miles, 10K) and paces, refreshments and most importantly, it’s absolutely free!

Some of our favorites:

Nike & Niketown

Every Nike store has a run club. Based on the area, some stores hold run clubs twice a week. Check with your local store for their schedule.

I LOVE their clothes! Lululemon also holds free yoga classes and run clubs every week. Check with your local store for their schedule.

Running retail stores

Usually running stores like Top to Top and Road Runner have their own run club. Check with your local store for their schedule.

Live in West LA?

Top to Top (2621 Wilshire Blvd., Santa Monica, CA 90403)

Wednesday at 6:30pm

Enjoy 3 distances of 5k, 5 miles, 10k, multiple paces, raffles (shirts, socks and even shoes!), and refreshments. I’m a proud member of the run club, since the days of when Ryan Greene and Paul Shanklin ran the run club–the best of times!! Also, at one of the anniversary celebrations of run club, they had a full-blown celebration! They invited the Cool Haus Ice Cream Sandwich Truck out (ate unlimited ice cream sammys), mariachi band, donkey pinanta filled with GUs, coupons and loot and pairs of shoes! They take care of their running family. Competitor Magazine rated TTT “BEST RUNNING STORE, Southern CA” & “BEST RUNNING STORE, Southern CA”. that HAS to say somethin’!

Niketown Beverly Hills (9560 Wilshire Blvd., Beverly Hills, CA 90212)

Thursday at 6:30pm

There are distances of 5K, 5 miles and 8 miles. Sometimes they have athletic, beverage and beauty brands sponsors present. In the past, Neutrogena was there providing sun protection kits for all the runners! KeVita Probiotic beverage was also there sampling and giving away bottles. They always attract a good amount of runners and it’s fun to hang out afterwards.

Parking: On the street.

Brentwood Country Club Running Loop (793 Gretna Green Way, Los Angeles, CA 90049)

I love this 2.1 mile loop. You can loop it however many times to build your miles. The mostly dirt path is easy on the knees and has slight inclines and a mini hill. Just becareful of the tree roots. Some of them protrude out from the dirt and can cause trippings for tired legs (or if you aren’t careful or if it’s too dark). Don’t run this after sun down. Paths aren’t lighted. Guarantee adventure if you do.
I usually start on Gretna Green Way, heading south and making a right on Montana, then right on Burlingame, right on San Vicente, right back onto Gretna Green Way.
Here is a map of the route via MapMyRun – http://www.mapmyrun.com/…
Parking: Free, easy parking along Gretna Green Way (btwn San Vicente & Montana), across from the Brentwood Science Magnet school. Please note: No parking along Gretna Green Way every Sunday morning because of the Brentwood Farmer’s Market.

Santa Monica Stairs (4th St & Adelaide Dr., Santa Monica, CA 90402)

SM Stairs–equipped with 175 steps of steep, straight-away, wooden stairs. There is plenty of huffing and puffing, paired with sweating and thigh burnings (and @#$%#$@, under my breath).
TIPS: For those, wanting a more challenging workout, take two steps at a time on your ‘up’ or try running it. There is a large grassy island on 4th Street where you can stretch, warm up and cool down–or lay in pain…
Location: You can access the top of SM Stairs at Adelaide Drive and 4th Street (in this residential area). Or access the bottom of the SM Stairs on Ocean Ave.
I normally park my car along San Vicente (few miles away) and run westbound on San Vicente to 4th street then do the stairs and run back to the car. This forces me to run more. I mean, I guess I gotta run back to my car if I want to go home, right?
Parking: Available on the street during daylight hours.  Restrictions kick in after 6pm, others 7pm.  Be aware of the midday street sweeping restrictions on alternating sides of the street on Thru and Fri (parking even more limited during those times). Parking is often available on 4th St. of San Vicente… just a short walk to the stairs.

{ friday favorites } Deadmau5, Renegade Craft Fair LA, L’Oreal Colour Riche

{ beats } He’s widely known as wearing a giant mouse head during live sets or the recognizable mickey+smiley face hybrid logo, Deadmau5, is one of EDM’s biggest DJs. He recently released his new album { while(1<2) } and I’m loving the track “Pets”. It’s the perfect summer-night-drive-with-your-windows down tune. It’s been a on-repeat fave. Lucky for us it’s KCRW’s Today Top Tune–meaning it’s a free download! (If you reach this post after 7/25, just message me with your email and I’ll send you the song)

deadmau5{ eclectic event } The Renegade Craft Fair Los Angeles (July 26+27) is this weekend in downtown LA’s Grand Park (200 N. Grand Ave., Los Angeles, CA) and I’m beyond excited. This is the place to find unique gifts, handmade items, and meet talented artists. I love supporting independent crafters and shopping for one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces, art prints, leather goods, rustic home decor pieces and much more. I’m looking forward to restock on some funky jewelry and art prints for my home.

Renagade Craft Fair{ beauty } Glamour Magazine recently sent me three L’Oreal Colour Riche Extraordinary Lip Colors to try and it’s been my favorite lip product this season! This revolutionary product has a doe foot applicator providing intense color of a lipstick, smooths on like a lip balm and provides a sheen of a lip gloss. My favorite color to use is Coral Encore. It instantly brightens my face and provides a pop of coral color during the summer. I’ll do a full review of the three colors in another post.

{ diy } succulent wedding centerpiece

DIY succulent centerpiece via it's jou life blog http://wp.me/p3cljj-bHWhat do you get when you mix an urban gardener with an DIY-enthusiast? DIY succulent terrarium centerpieces! We spent an hour of our Sunday to create a few of these lovely centerpieces for our upcoming wedding. We’re still having our florist make some floral centerpieces, but felt creating these additional DIY centerpieces is a beautiful way to add a personal touch and share our love for succulents with our guests. (It’s also friendly to our wedding budget!) I’ve learned floral centerpieces can cost from $75-$200. Materials to create these DIY succulent centerpieces cost about $15-$20 each.

A succulent terrarium isn’t only for weddings, it can also add the finishing touch to a coffee table, low-maintenance greenery to a desk or even a unique housewarming gift!

The Usual Suspects:
– Glass container with wide opening
– Succulents, assorted
– Cactus & Succulent soil mix
– Horticultural charcoal (optional)
– Decorative pebbles or river rocks
– A spoon, or little shovel

1. Place a 1-inch layer of pebbles/river rocks on the bottom of container; this provides drainage so the plants won’t rot in standing water. We used a mixture of large-size and small-size river rocks. We bought our glass containers from Michael’s craft store and succulents from our local garden nursery.

2. (Optional) Add a 1/2-inch of horticultural charcoal. The charcoal will help keep the terrarium smelling fresh. Smooth out this layer too. We read it helps to rinse the charcoal before to prevent a layer of black dust from collecting on the inside of the vase.

3. Place a layer of cactus mix soil, a fast-draining soil that retains little moisture. Use your little shovel or hand to level the cactus mix soil in your glass container.

4. Remove plants from pots. If you have multiple succulents in one pot, gently break them apart and use them separately. Scoop a little hole in the soil and place roots in soil. Gently add more soil around the edges of the container and around the base of the plants and pat around the roots. Sometimes the lanky, tall succulents have a difficult time standing up and tend to topple over. Pack more soil around them and strategically place some large-size river rocks around the base to create some stability. We used around 3-5 succulents per centerpiece.

5. Finish the look by adding more river rocks on the top layer. Done!

Care Tips:
1. Give the terrarium direct sunlight every day for at least five or six hours.
2. Water the terrarium every two weeks. Water lightly–don’t over water.
3. The water should lightly drain to the bottom. After watering, there should not be more than an inch of water visible in the gravel at the bottom.
4. Use your finger to touch the soil and check if it’s dry before watering.

We still have to make more and look forward to shopping for more succulent varieties at our local nurseries!
