October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Did you know that 1 out of 3 women and 1 out of 7 men in the United States and globally experience sexual or domestic violence? It’s unfathomable how high the odds are.

For immigrant women, 1 out of 2 Asian Pacific Islander (API) have been physically, sexually, and/or emotionally abused. And perhaps it’s cultural, but it’s been found that API women are the least likely to report abuse.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and this month is dedicated to increasing awareness about domestic violence (DV) and how widespread domestic violence is. DV isn’t limited to physical abuse but can take many forms and describes as sexual, financial, emotional, and psychological harm.

South Bay CPAF Fundraising Event this Saturday (10/14)

As some of you know, I serve on this non-profit group in South Bay LA called the South Bay Advisory Council (SBAC), which is part of the organization Center for the Pacific Asian Family (CPAF). It’s an organization that advocates against family violence and violence against women. They provide a 24-hour in-language hotline and intervention services, emergency shelter programs, transitional housing programs, prevention and community education.

There’s a transitional shelter in the South Bay and SBAC decided to put on an awareness/fundraising event this weekend, Saturday, 10/14. We’re fundraising for the Wellness Scholarship Fund that promotes and encourages self-care for the women at the shelter.

Learn how you can make a difference

I would love for you to join and learn about issues of domestic violence, sexual assault, and how you can make a difference. Tickets are $10 per person, and that includes lunch. There is no obligation to donate when at the luncheon; however, there will be a silent auction and you can get started on early holiday shopping. You can bid on luxury sunglasses, YogaWorks monthly passes, a Trader Joe’s gift basket, Starbucks gift cards, and more!

We’re really trying to establish a greater presence in SB and have more community partners, so please share this with your friends and family who may be interested.

– Why this new FlyWheel cycling studio in Playa Vista is so FLY –

Incorporating indoor cycling into my regimen has really amped up my workout game. Not only am I increasing my endurance but spinning is joint-friendly and perfect for all ages. FlyWheel has really created a new type of workout that allows every rider, regardless of level, to bring out the best in themselves. They incorporate performance tracking technology in an immersive, interactive, and music-driven indoor cycling experience that makes it fabulous, fit, and fun! I always grab my friends to spin at FlyWheel and experience the wonders of group fitness together.

The new Playa Vista location opened up last year and is in a prime location. After a big sweat grab a green juice at the Whole Foods next door, brunch it up with a gourmet burger at Hopdoddy or a poke bowl at Da Kikokiko, a cup of joe at Starbucks, or just walk around the hip outdoor center. Tip: There’s an awesome Farmers Market happenin’ on Saturday mornings and they set up right up in front of FlyWheel!

You know that feeling when a dang good show ends?

Two Sundays ago the spellbinding HBO hit limited series, Big Little Lies, aired its much anticipated season finale. It surely delivered in resolution and clarity (as a well as heartbreak) since it strung us along in suspense and intrigue for the past seven weeks. Wayne and I were captivated and mesmerized from the start. We watched from the first airdate of the premiere and it was agony having to wait a week in between episodes, let alone almost two months for all our questions to be answered. It was well worth it though.

For those unfamiliar with “Big Little Lies” a disclaimer: highly provocative and intensely addictive–you may never put the remote down! Based on Liane Moriarty’s novel, this murder-mystery dark dramedy revolves around the seemingly perfect lives of three women (Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley) and their families in Monterey. There’s a murder and the storytelling is told through the police interrogation of other community residents. With a show that is created and written by David E. Kelley (The Practice, Ally McBeal), directed by Jean-Marc Vallée (Wild, Dallas Buyers Club), and starring an all-star cast, it’s everything you crave from compelling storytelling and brilliant acting. Yes, it’s THAT riveting and irresistible.

My best kept beauty secrets

Wet hair & #nomakeup game strong

There’s no magical vial that leads to the fountain of youth, however, the secret to having beautiful skin is easier and more obtainable than you think. Here are my 10 best kept beauty secrets that I’ve implemented into my lifestyle.

  1. Protect with SPF 30 sunscreen // The best anti-aging tip I’ve been advocating is sunscreen! I don’t just write and review about it, I actually wear a broad spectrum UVA/UVB of at least SPF 30 sunscreen every day. Read my sunscreen post, here.
  2. Wear a hat // Growing up I used to make fun of my mom looking like a beekeeper on sunny summer days. If you are to see my mom now, she has beautiful, smooth skin and does not look her age. At all. Now, you’d often find me in a lightweight long-sleeve and a hat, hoping I age as gracefully.
  3. Drink enough water // To be honest, this is a daily struggle for me. It’s easy if I’m at my desk sipping out of my rainbow sippy cup. When I’m out and about I take my water bottle and drink to stay hydrated. Find a water bottle that works for your lifestyle and make sure you take it everywhere with you.

2016 A Year in Review

2016 // https://itsjoulife.com/2016/12/31/2016-year-review/

By God’s grace and love, 2016 was another epic year in the record books. I swear each and every year breezes on by. I’m certain it’s because we’re thoroughly enjoying life’s blessings to keep track of time.

2016 has been another big year of change, followed with a new mindset, challenges, adventures, and opportunities. Wayne has been woodworking and building furniture. I recently left my corporate job to pursue my creative passions full-time. Bentley is still a gem of a pup and loves napping and belly rubs.

2016 Highlights

  • Traveling near and far to celebrate eight weddings and a few births
  • Chaperoning high school students for a Model United Nations debate conference and hitting all the tourist spots in New York
  • Vacationing in Maui for a friend’s wedding and exploring the grand Na Pali Coast in Kauai
  • Camping and stargazing with family and friends in Joshua Tree
  • Celebrating our three year anniversary by eating our way through Japan during the autumn season
  • Our community garden growing strong
  • I booked a university ad campaign and am currently on a billboard (My first acting job!)

My favorite purchase in 2016 was the 1 Second Everyday (1SE) app. It’s a modern day video diary. Imagine your life as a movie. It’s a step up from just taking stills or making a photo album of the year. It’s nostalgic to see the finished video. I realized my day isn’t as mundane as I thought and this app enabled me to see the beauty in my everyday. I love how my year turned out.

How to be a #GirlBoss by NastyGal founder Sophia Amoruso // Reads

How to be a #GirlBoss // itsjoulife.com

#GirlBoss is much more than a self-help business book

NastyGal is not your mother’s taste (in fashion) and neither is Sophia Amoruso’s cheeky, self-help business memoir, #GirlBoss. I absolutely savored every piece of advice Amoruso dishes. I appreciate her self-awareness, ability to blaze her own path (on her own terms and with her unique style), streets smarts, sassy humor, and practical advice for those who want to be their own #GirlBoss. The illustrations drew me in as much as her inspirational bite-size quotes. She writes with a truthful vulnerability and shares her fair share of lessons learned.

For those who aren’t familiar with Amoruso, she went from a hitchhiking, dumpster-diving, community college dropout to creating a mega fashion brand, Nasty Gal, that has sold over $300 million in vintage and new clothing and accessories. Her humble beginnings started with an eBay store and she was a one-woman enterprise–mastering the skills of thrift store shopping, bargaining, photographing, copywriting, marketing, and shipping logistics. Talk about wearing multiple hats! She was her own start-up company. Her business may have seemed to grow overnight like a rags to riches story, but she worked her tail off because she finally found her passion and a clear purpose of who she wanted to become and what she wanted to accomplish in life. I finished this book in a day and furiously took notes.

Friends of Ours.

Hello, and welcome to It’s Jou Life! We’re Wayne and Jennifer, a (relatively) newly wed couple who found love in the most unexpecting place. This is our DIY / lifestyle blog—musing about natural, healthy, artisanal living, and everything in between.

We started this blog because our family and friends always ask us how we grow our own organic vegetables, what is Wayne woodworking on now, to send over our miso black cod recipe, what snacks stock our pantry, a tutorial on that cute zippered pouch, tips for marathon running, where do we worship, what to bring for a camping trip, what’s Jennifer’s skincare regimen… you get the idea. This is our way to share life’s loves.
