October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Did you know that 1 out of 3 women and 1 out of 7 men in the United States and globally experience sexual or domestic violence? It’s unfathomable how high the odds are.

For immigrant women, 1 out of 2 Asian Pacific Islander (API) have been physically, sexually, and/or emotionally abused. And perhaps it’s cultural, but it’s been found that API women are the least likely to report abuse.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and this month is dedicated to increasing awareness about domestic violence (DV) and how widespread domestic violence is. DV isn’t limited to physical abuse but can take many forms and describes as sexual, financial, emotional, and psychological harm.

South Bay CPAF Fundraising Event this Saturday (10/14)

As some of you know, I serve on this non-profit group in South Bay LA called the South Bay Advisory Council (SBAC), which is part of the organization Center for the Pacific Asian Family (CPAF). It’s an organization that advocates against family violence and violence against women. They provide a 24-hour in-language hotline and intervention services, emergency shelter programs, transitional housing programs, prevention and community education.

There’s a transitional shelter in the South Bay and SBAC decided to put on an awareness/fundraising event this weekend, Saturday, 10/14. We’re fundraising for the Wellness Scholarship Fund that promotes and encourages self-care for the women at the shelter.

Learn how you can make a difference

I would love for you to join and learn about issues of domestic violence, sexual assault, and how you can make a difference. Tickets are $10 per person, and that includes lunch. There is no obligation to donate when at the luncheon; however, there will be a silent auction and you can get started on early holiday shopping. You can bid on luxury sunglasses, YogaWorks monthly passes, a Trader Joe’s gift basket, Starbucks gift cards, and more!

We’re really trying to establish a greater presence in SB and have more community partners, so please share this with your friends and family who may be interested.

Sephora Skin Superfoods VIB Rouge Event at SmogShoppe

I’m all about that #feedyourskin superfoods life

As a healthy lifestyle enthusiast I was beaming with joy when I received the invite for Sephora Skin Superfoods VIB Rouge Event at SmogShoppe in Culver City. I used 2,500 of my Sephora points to secure my spot–it was well worth it.

I’m all about that #feedyourskin superfoods life. As you know, the husband and I grow our own greens, eat them, and now I’m thrilled to use ingredients like kale, echinacea, honey, coconut, and argan oil on my skin. Talk about sleep, eat, breathe healthy foods.

Snapchat with Miranda Kerr of KORA Organics

The highlight was meeting with brand founders Miranda Kerr of KORA Organics and Mark Veeder of Farmacy and talking natural skincare and sharing tips. Miranda Kerr even grabbed my phone to Snapchat our moment! Her new skincare line uses the antioxidant noni fruit to smooth, nourish, and brighten skin with a natural glow.

Those behind Farmacy Beauty are the bee’s knees

This brand fuses age-old botanical wisdom with cutting-edge technologies to create a gentle and natural formulation. Founder, Mark Veeder, is the pioneer plantsman behind the discovery of Echinacea GreenEnvy, the unique ingredient used in their line. Farmacy has a farm out in upstate New York where they cultivate the plant and use bees to pollinate its flowers.

Yesterday I attended a fabulous and fun Yelp Elite Event at the Hourglass Cosmetics Flagship store in Venice and it was the bees knees!

As a long-time fangirl of this brand, I soaked up all their skincare and beauty tips/tricks and learned about new products. VP of Global Artistry and Training Laura Janes rocked the Complexion Master Class–debriefing us about the story of Hourglass, demo-ing why Hourglass reigns supreme (even demonstrating on herself a face of makeup within 10 minutes without a mirror), and showcasing their new products–and I was smitten.

A luxury cosmetics brand that is against animal testing, free of parabens, phthalates, sulfates, synthetic fragrances, synthetic dyes, vegan-friendly, and gluten-free (no, not to eat but for those with gluten skin sensitivity). Best of all? They’re revolutionizing the way we see and use skincare and makeup.

The Ambient Lighting products are incredible. Think of it as an IG filter #IRL. It’ll transform your #selfie game, for serious!

I feasted on an elaborate cheese, fruit, and breadboard. Such a treat. I LOVE the swag bag of a full-size Girl Lip in Believer, travel-size of the Veil Mineral Primer, 1.5mm Mechanical Gel Eye Liner in Obsidian. Thanks, Yelp LA and Brittany for another awesome YE event. My skin looks unreal right now!

My Holy Grail Hourglass Products

If you haven’t tried their products, these are my holy grail Hourglass products:
Hourglass Cosmetics Veil Mineral Primer SPF 15 1 fl oz. // Their best-selling item, selling 1 bottle every minute! I can see why this award-winning, state-of-the-art primer is a staple in many makeup artists’ bags because it extends the wear of foundation for a perfect complexion that lasts; an oil-free and water-resistant primer not only creates a smooth, even canvas for makeup, but also conceals redness, minimizes the appearance of pores, fine lines and wrinkles; and provides broad spectrum SPF 15 protection.
HOURGLASS Ambient Lighting Palette: Dim light -Incandescent Light -Radiant Light // Glow, baby, glow! I’m a sucker for palettes not only because it’s a value but because these shades are unreal! Their Ambient Lighting Powders utilize Photoluminescent Technology to filter out harsh light and refine the appearance of the complexion. Each of these high-tech, soft-focus finishing powders recreate an exquisitely flattering light source. Easy translation: That lit from within IG filter #IRL. The powders can be applied individually or layered to imbue skin with a multidimensional glow.
Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush Incandescent Electra (BNIB) (Cool Peach color) // I always get compliments on how healthy my skin looks. I owe it all to this product. It’s a natural flush of color that gives my skin look vibrant and glowing. This captivating hybrid blush combines the illuminating effects of Ambient® Strobe Lighting Powder with breathtakingly modern hues to instantly brighten cheeks for seamless, glowing, lit from within color.  INCANDESCENT ELECTRA is a cool peach blush blended with Incandescent Strobe Light for a celestial glow.

I’m running the Lululemon SeaWheeze Half Marathon 2017 in Vancouver!

Running the SeaWheeze Half Marathon in Vancouver https://wp.me/p7RBMP-10P

It’s happening in August! I’m running the Lululemon SeaWheeze Half Marathon!

The bestie and I successfully signed up for the Lululemon SeaWheeze Half Marathon in Vancouver! I tend to choose destination races so I can explore another city and make it into a vacation. My first full marathon was in Hawaii and the gorgeous views made the grueling race bearable. (I should have trained better for that though.)

SeaWheeze isn’t your average half marathon. It’s a summer weekend of yoga, running, and an epic music festival. Over 10,000 runners run along the Seawall in Stanley park through breathtakingly beautiful Vancouver views and finish the race with an awesome party.

What I’m looking forward to at the SeaWheeze Half Marathon

• Enjoying Vancouver’s ocean views along the race route and challenging my endurance on those hills

• A pair of special edition, can’t-get-em-anywhere-else SeaWheeze run shorts. I can’t wait to see this year’s design! (Included in entry fee)

Exploring NATURAL PRODUCTS EXPO WEST 2017

Top 10 Trends at Natural Products Expo West 2017 via It's Jou Life blog https://wp.me/p7RBMP-YO

A few weeks ago I had the wonderful opportunity to attend the 37th annual Natural Products Expo West, the world’s largest natural, organic, and healthy products expo. I was among the record-breaking 80,000 attendees perusing 3,100 exhibitors, including more than 500 first-time exhibitors, at the Anaheim Convention Center and extending into the Hilton and Marriott ballrooms. I excitedly counted down the weeks for this multi-day event packed with delectable tastings, educational seminars, and meeting innovative companies. As a healthy lifestyle and skincare enthusiast (and serious snacker), I’m always scouting out new natural products, learning about upcoming trends, and chatting with brands that have a mindful mission. As my sophomore year attending, thank goodness I came prepared with a good night’s rest, comfortable shoes, and a big appetite because I logged some serious miles and ate to my heart’s content.

Free breakfast week at Chick-fil-A // March 20-24, 2017

Free breakfast Monday thru Friday, really?

Rise and shine Angelenos! Head out to grab your free breakfast at your local LA City Chick-fil-A. During March 20-24, 2017, several participating Chick-fil-A locations in Los Angeles City is offering free breakfast from 6:30am-10:30am.

I’m so glad I stopped by Chick-fil-A the other day (I’m basically there at least 2x/month) and saw this flier because I love breakfast foods, especially their buttery biscuits and southern hospitality. C’mon, free breakfast for a whole week is ridiculously awesome! I wonder if I can fit in early morning workouts then indulge at Chick-fil-A, all five days…  LBH, I’m always motivated by food.

What’s cool is Chick-fil-A is offering a different item each day, so take a peek at the five menu items below and try something new. Also, make sure you check the locations that are participating in this offer below. It’d be horrible if you make the drive to your local Chick-fil-A and they don’t know what you’re talking about. Sad face.

Let me know what’s your favorite item at Chick-fil-A. Mine’s a tie between The Chick-fil-A Biscuit (breakfast only) and the Spicy Chicken Sandwich. I’m also impressed with their entree salads. I can’t wait to try their new Egg White Grill (I had no idea this existed, until now) Sounds healthy, yeah? Happy eating!

Friends of Ours.

Hello, and welcome to It’s Jou Life! We’re Wayne and Jennifer, a (relatively) newly wed couple who found love in the most unexpecting place. This is our DIY / lifestyle blog—musing about natural, healthy, artisanal living, and everything in between.

We started this blog because our family and friends always ask us how we grow our own organic vegetables, what is Wayne woodworking on now, to send over our miso black cod recipe, what snacks stock our pantry, a tutorial on that cute zippered pouch, tips for marathon running, where do we worship, what to bring for a camping trip, what’s Jennifer’s skincare regimen… you get the idea. This is our way to share life’s loves.

Growing trends of the natural and organic products industry // Natural Products Expo West 2016

IMG_6632The US-market of natural and organic products is a $153 billion industry and showing no signs of a slow down. Mainly driven by the consistent growth of consumers demanding natural, healthy and eco-conscious products, it’s no surprise that this mega industry has a plethora of new companies emerging every year.

Last month I had the delightful opportunity to attend the 36th annual Natural Products Expo West, the the world’s largest natural, organic and healthy products event. It was like Charlie in the Chocolate Factory. As a healthy lifestyle enthusiast, I grasped all the natural product consumer trends, channeled my inner Augustus Gloop meets Michelle Phan–indulging in food samples while swatching beauty products. It was a weekend filled with tastings, education and meeting wonderful brands. I was among 77,000 attendees perusing more than 3,000 exhibitors at the Anaheim Convention Center. I didn’t have my Fitbit on me, but I’m sure I logged some serious miles that weekend.

Below is an overview of some consumer trends surrounding the healthy lifestyle products industry.

Back to Our Roots: Quinoa, chia, acai, Kombucha, raw, sprouted, coconut oil–superfood ingredients and preparation techniques that date back to the days of pre-industrialized foods. Brands are focusing on natural, whole and nutrient-dense ingredients. The skincare industry mirrors this trend with using pure ingredients like argan and coconut oil. I met a brand, Cocokind, an organic skincare line centered around using virgin coconut oil and superfoods. Consumers are conscientious with ingredients they eat and use on their body. They are staying away from genetically modified foods, artificial colors, preservatives, parabens and products tested on animals.

The Busy Individual: The always on-the-go individual lacks time, but craves smart and nutritious fuel in-between meals. Think hand-held snacks and drinks that are convenient, delicious and healthy. I like to kick-off my morning with drinking my greens with a Suja Juice cold-pressed juice. On a side note: I’m thinking of doing a juice cleanse to reset my body. Any advice or recommendations for which juice brand to try? A new product I’ve discovered are meat and veggie bars from Wild Zora and Wilde Snacks. It’s healthier than conventional jerkies because they are free from nitrites, nitrates, MSG, not too salty, contain vegetables, use grass-fed, free-range and hormone-free meats. I’m a big snacker and sometimes crave a meaty snack high in protein and low in sodium. Read my favorite snack discovery last year here.

The Socially Conscious Shopper: The today consumers have conscious living woven into the fabric of their lives and making informed decisions by keeping the environment and mission-backed products in mind. They choose purposeful brands with ethical practices and sustainable packaging over its conventional counterparts. I met a brand, This Bar Saves Lives, that donates a life-saving food packet with every snack bar purchased. It’s the “buy one, give one” philosophy, fair trade practices and donating proceeds to non-profits that allow consumers to make an impact with each purchase.

Over the next several weeks I’ll be sharing with you my tried and true favorite products from the expo.

Our finisher medals connected together say, “Together we ran 200 miles.”

I never thought I’d ever do it, but I ran a 200-mile relay race as part of the Ragnar Relay So Cal race 2015. Our team came in #42 and ran it in 26 hours and 22 mins. As much as this race was lengthy, it taught me a lot about endurance and pushing my mental and physical limits.

It’s been about a year since and even now just the thought of running a race that starts at Huntington Beach to San Diego is exhausting! It’s what crazy people do, right? In all seriousness, it was actually one of the best and challenging experiences. The race was well-organized, scenic routes, energetic crowds and spirited team members made it all worth it.

It’s been a longtime dream of Wayne’s and my good friend Jason made it happen for us! Jason was the super team captain and master organizer of this beast of a race. We didn’t have to worry because as a veteran of the race he had all the binders, splits and routes mapped out. Best of all, our 12-person relay team represented all the Harry Potter houses in matching outfits. I was team Hufflepuff and was just too cool running in knee high socks, yellow and blue striped tie and a wand–casting spells against other runners.

My three legs were a cumulative 14 miles and had its own sets of challenges. I ran in the mid-day heat in the Santa Ana river channel for 7 hard miles, enjoyed the dark midnight hours and nature’s noises in Laguna Niguel and experienced the sunrise rays of along the beach in San Diego. The most challenging part? Staying up for around 30+ hours and doing my best to be physically functioning to race hard.

It was an energy like no other and my team members were the most spirited, supporting and encouraging group of individuals. We tag-teamed providing water support where there was car access, squeezed in a Taiwanese dinner between van shifts and took turns napping in 20-minute increments, if possible. The team medals were pretty wicked. The 12 medals also came together like a puzzle to read, “Together we ran 200-miles.”

The photos need no explanation. Pure excitement. Spirited Away. Full adrenaline.

Best. Race. Ever.

Just don’t ask me to do it again.
